![]() Note that FreeFileSync is included in this list of software known to include OpenCandy (and I confirmed that via scans with after downloading from links at it's project site at ): I hate it when developers do that kind of thing. This is something the developer of FreeFilesync is including with the software now (adware installed by default, unless you're very careful to use a Custom Installation and uncheck all of the boxes that install that kind of crap). Depending on other information OpenCandy determines about your computer, it may try to install various other products including browser hijackers by default (for example, the installer is trying to include Linkey when I run it unless I'm very careful to "opt out" by using a custom installation and unchecking the boxes for the defaults). The downloads available from the links on the project site at for FreeFileSync are using OpenCandy adware. I'd suggest always scanning any software you want to install using first (as a handful of products will let you know about nasty adware that's included by default). They are basically afraid of lawsuits if they flag adware as malicious, as long as the user has the ability to "opt out" (of course, the installers can be deceiving and most users just use the defaults and end up with an adware infested machine, because they don't pay any attention to the "fine print" the installers present to them). ![]() Of course, the same thing applies to many other Antivirus Products. Sorry, but McAfee is not very good about flagging PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs), including some very nasty adware with browser hijackers. My corporate version of McAfee did not find anything. In any event, use the Custom Installation choice and uncheck the boxes under it so that you don't end up with adware installed, paying careful attention to the "fine print". That's the way OpenCandy works (tries to install different software, depending on your computer setup, location, etc.). Depending on your PC, you may see a different product being offered by default (a different browser hijacker compared to Linkey that it tries to install on my computer). IOW, make sure that you have a screen setup this way (Custom Installation, all other boxes unchecked) before clicking the Install button. Then, you should end up with a clean install without any adware when you click the Install Button. Then, once you check the box for a Custom Installation, uncheck the boxes under it so that you are not installing anything else like Linkey browser hijackers, etc. Then, on the next screen, make sure to check the box for a "Custom Installation" (not the default Typical Installation). So, if you want to use it, you'll need to accept the license agreement as the first step. I checked with both adwcleaner and malwarebytes after the installation was finished. I then performed a test install to make sure I could "opt out" of the adware it installs by default, and it installs clean that way (with no adware). I ran a fresh scan of it after downloading it. So, you may want to use this link to make sure you have the same copy I got with the same opt out screens: It selected this mirror for me (the download link I got it from). You can get the latest 6.6 release here (which automatically selects an available mirror hosting it): ![]() Again, that's some the developer of the product is doing. GRRRRRįreeFileSync is hosted by sourceforge (that's your safest download site), and I see loads of complaints about adware being included by default with the latest versions of it. ![]() But, it's installing adware by default, unless you're careful to select the Custom Installation choice and "opt out" by unchecking the default selections that include it. If it was an "opt in" versus "opt out" kind of thing, I wouldn't mind it as much. ![]() I hate it when developers do that kind of thing (include adware by default) to try and increase revenue for their efforts. I'm seeing lots of complaints about that now with this product. It looks like the developer of FreeFileSync is including adware now (not just something a download site is adding via a custom installer). Does anyone know a link for DL that does NOT contain Malware. I have downloaded FreeFileSync latest version 6.6 from two sites, checked each using VirusTotal and both have the following four Malware items. ![]()
